District 28 - Seletar, Yio Chu Kang
Comprising of Seletar and part of Yio Chu Kang of District 26, District 28 is a historical and residential area that holds many heritage and cultural stories. The British naval and air bases used to be located here. In the future, the Seletar Aerospace Park will be built to serve Singapore’s aviation industries. Introduction/History Seletar Home to Singapore landmarks such as the British naval and air bases, the Upper Seletar Reservoir and the future Seletar Aerospace Park, Seletar is named after the native coastal dwellers who lived at the edge of the Johor Straits and the mouth of Seletar River. From Seletar, the people migrated to Sungai Pulai in southwest Johor subsequently. Seletar in Chinese means “koon kung” or naval base. In 1927 construction of the Seletar Air Base was started and it was completed in 1929. Used as an air base for international airlines like KNILM, KLM, Qantas, Empire Airways and British Imperial Airways for 9 years, it is now used as an aviation training centre for aspiring pilots of the Singapore Youth Flying Club. Yio Chu Kang A residential precinct rich with Singaporean history, it was a place full of gambier and pepper plantations. Amid the foliage of the nearby parks and playgrounds, the residential area contains both low density housing and high-rise apartments.
